Donna Mandau, BA

President & CEO

Donna Mandau is the Founder, President and Chief Executive Office of Graphene Leaders Canada (GLC) and is a member of the company’s board of directors. Donna founded GLC in 2013, bringing more than 25 years of industry leadership, operations, investor relations, business development and executive management experience to her role with the company. Donna is currently working to complete an Executive Management MBA and has achieved a degree from the University of Alberta.

Donna’s entrepreneurial leadership and passion is responsible for the business development of a clean technology company, its operations initiatives, development of strategic partnerships and stakeholder relationships, investor relations and supporting the overall marketing platforms in elevating the company’s business model and vision.  Her prior work as an entrepreneur was working with a technology and engineering team where Donna came to realize graphene as a valuable solution to that market sector.  Conducting further research into graphene, Donna realized the immense potential and business opportunity to exploit the properties of graphene and formed a team of like-minded individuals looking for technology solutions utilizing graphene for applications solutions to serve Alberta and Canada that would support global initiatives.

Donna’s vision in founding GLC is to develop graphene innovative solutions to serve global markets and enable technological, environmental and economic advancement for Canada; to provide opportunities worldwide for humanitarian advancement through stewardship that embodies responsible planning and management of our environment to serve our planet.

Imran Ally, BCom., CPA, CA

Vice President & CFO

Imran Ally has over 25 years of leadership experience in the areas of financial management, financing, business analysis, risk management, strategic planning, accounting, financial reporting, operational monitoring and reporting, information systems management, procurement, contracts, and corporate governance.

Prior to joining GLC, Imran was the CFO for the Canadian division of a publicly traded international engineering firm where, as a member of the leadership team, he provided strong financial oversight, strategic advice and inputs to key business decisions for Canadian/North American operations. During his tenure Imran led the company financially through periods of growth and periods of significant challenges. He possesses superior business sense, strong analytical skills and innovative thinking which he successfully applied to the financial management of Canadian operations. He was also responsible for ensuring adherence to governance requirements, controls, and reporting practices in various areas, in addition to stringent cash flow management.

Imran earned his Business degree from the University of Alberta which houses one of the top business schools in Canada. The University of Alberta is ranked as one of the top 100 universities in the world. His formative post-graduation professional years were spent with a big four firm where he developed a strong foundation in internal controls and processes, risk assessment, financial analysis, and business analysis, in addition to accounting, auditing, and tax. Imran also spent time in the business financing industry developing a solid understanding of the attributes and information required to obtain and maintain funding from lenders and investors.

During his career, he has managed through periods of start-up, growth, stability, and contraction, and has a strong understanding of strategies and actions required during such phases.

Pierre Mercier

Project Manager/Manufacturing Director

Pierre Mercier has extensive experience in the ideation, development, project management, and commercialization of products.  In his career he has successfully commercialized many products and is a known to have a strong ability to bring projects to completion given his high level thought processes,  creativity,  leadership skills, and his ability to garner and incorporate diverse resources .  He is a natural entrepreneur, innovator, and leader with 30 years in senior executive roles.  He also has an innate sense of market trends. Over the years he has cultivated an extensive network of contacts in business including television, retail, and manufacturing.

Rick Tiedemann

Strategic Alliances Director

Rick will tell you that while he has been enthusiastically engaged in the corporate world for 40 years, he has only truly worked for the Tiedemann Corporation. The partnering with various organizations was, and is vital, as it is through these partnerships that the Tiedemann Corporation and its shareholders (Rick, his wife, their 3 kids and their spouses and their 5 grandkids) are able to thrive in a manner that they enjoy.

Rick spent over 30 yrs working in the multi-national pharmaceutical industry as a senior leader and executive within a wide variety of therapeutic areas. These therapeutic areas included, infectious disease, orthopedics, women’s health, diabetes, neurosciences (which included mental health, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis), dermatology and allergy and immunology. His leadership responsibilities included partnering with colleagues to develop high performing business development teams, government relations and market access, compensation, personality profiling education and corporate strategy.

Rick’s professional passions have always included a combination of health and business interests. In 2012 Rick chose to follow his “Why” and opened a Copeman Healthcare center in Edmonton and he was a Senior Director with a focus on Corporate Health. In January of 2021 he left to start his own company, (Calm Water Lifestyles), and now works with Leaders to optimize their health and performance. His 40 years in the corporate marinade have helped to fuel his current passion which is to create a new narrative around Leadership Wellbeing and to get leaders to think about Leadership Health as a vital risk mitigation strategy within their businesses. He speaks extensively with various leadership forums (CEO, YPO, EO etc), Executive teams and other leadership groups to help them to appreciate how they can become Corporate Athletes and create the absolute healthiest and highest performing version of themselves. A key ingredient in the Corporate Athlete recipe is sleep, and this allows Rick to share his extensive experience in the neuroscience world as he creates enthusiasm for sleep being the Ultimate High-Performance Drug.

His personal passions include waterskiing, making log beds and antler chandeliers, aquatic ecosystem stewardship, building homes and spending as much time as possible building memories with friends and family.

Ushula Tefashe, PhD

Science & Technology Director

Dr. Ushula Tefashe earned a doctorate (PhD), with great distinction (magna cum laude), in Chemistry from Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg (Germany) in 2012 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gunther Wittstock. From 2012-2015, Dr. Tefashe was a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Laboratory for Electrochemical Reactive Imaging and Detection of Biological Systems at McGill University in the Research Group of Prof. Janine Mauzeroll. In April 2015, Dr. Tefashe joined the Research Group of Prof. Richard McCreery in the Department of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Alberta as a Postdoctoral Researcher, and later rose to the position of a Research Associate.

Dr. Tefashe is a co-inventor of one Patent and has co-authored at least 40 peer-reviewed journal articles in international journals. His research interest is the field of electrochemistry, corrosion, biosensors, electrochemiluminescence, molecular electronics, and energy storage and conversion systems. He is serving as a reviewer of several international reputed journals.

D. Jed Harrison, Ph.D.

Director

Prof. D. Jed Harrison is Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at the University of Alberta, where he served as a Faculty member from 1984 to 2021, and as Department Chair from 2006-16. He was a cross-appointed research officer at the National Institute for Nanotechnology (NINT) for a decade.  Prof Harrison earned an Honours B.Sc. in Chemical Physics from Simon Fraser University in 1980, receiving the Gordon Shrum Gold Medal upon graduation.  He was the recipient of a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada Post-Graduate Fellowship while undertaking graduate studies in Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has held appointments as a Visiting Researcher or Professor at NASA in the USA, CNRS in France, and Dublin City University in Dublin.  He has published over 170 scientific manuscripts, is the recipient of numerous awards, grant funding of over 30 million dollars over his career, and is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.  Prof Harrison received grant funding from Alberta’s agencies, Canada’s NSERC, the USA’s DARPA, and various corporations for work on microfluidic systems and biosensors for bio-agent and point of care monitoring.  He served on the Program and Steering Committees of several international conferences, and was appointed to the Editorial Advisory Boards of Analytical Chemistry, Lab on a Chip, and Electrophoresis.  He sits on the Advisory Board to NASA’s Microdevices Lab, a division of JPL.

Prof Harrison was the first to coin the phrase and publish the lab on a chip concept, also known as microfluidics, in 1991, working with Andreas Manz. He and his team then developed lab on a chip technology for over three decades.  Dr. Harrison was involved in spinning out a company from The University of Alberta, Advanced Integrated Microsystems, in order to commercialize the combination of microfluidics with mass spectrometry, and several of his patents are licensed to companies in Canada and the United States.  He also has an extensive research portfolio on electrochemical-based chemical and biochemical sensors.

Mammen Tharakan, MBA

Director

With over twenty years of leadership in sectors including aviation, entertainment, technology, Mammen Tharakan joined Edmonton International Airport as the Director, E-Commerce, Cargo & Aviation Real Estate. Together with a strong & dedicated team, Mammen works with a strong customer focus to retain Canada, and Edmonton’s positions in the global supply chain. His duties include identifying new technologies and partnerships that support communities in their growth. Recognizing the crucial role that travel provides in connecting the world, he is committed to advancing the industry through collaboration and innovation. Mammen holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Hult International Business School in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

Kasey Kozicky

Director

Kasey brings more than 37+ years of experience in public accounting responsible for all aspects of accounting, audit, income tax, deal structuring and negotiation along with other services rendered for major engagements. Kasey has been a partner since 1990 in Yaremchuk & Annicchiarico LLP, a Certified Public Accounting Firm, where he was directly involved in the operations of the firm and was responsible for providing direction and strategic planning. For the past year, Kasey has been involved in GLC as a financial advisor to the board and has valuable expertise to bring to GLC as we grow our technology.

Mikolai Vajda, BSc

Mikolai achieved a BSc degree as a chemistry major and biology minor from the University of Alberta in spring 2018. During the course of his degree, he gained relevant chemistry experience from spending a summer as an analytical chemistry lab assistant along with volunteering under a chemistry graduate student for two semesters in the lab of Prof. James Harynuk. While at the University of Alberta, Mikolai developed extensive in-lab chemistry skills which has been further advanced with his work in Graphene Leaders Canada. Working with all projects in the company, Mikolai has developed strong graphene knowledge and skills in both the coatings and water filtration platforms.
